The MTV VMA’s have a reputation of making history every year. From Madonna and Britney kissing on stage in 2003 to Miley twerking on Robin Thicke in 2013, here we are, again wrapping up the year of 2015 with more memorable moments at the music awards.

For the past two years, MTV has decided to let the show run itself without a host, with Kevin Hart hosting in 2012. But after this change they decided to go back to their old ways, letting one of the most popular pop stars of this generation host.

For this year’s VMA’s, MTV asked the one and only Miley Cyrus to host this year’s awards show, and some people think it was just to prevent her from performing after her raunchy performance just two years ago. Cyrus, of course, performed and wowed the crowd with her outrageous outfits throughout the show. Even with the bizarre clothing and provocative language, those were not the most surprising things that occurred.

Nicki Minaj started off the night with Taylor Swift, despite their recent Twitter feud. The two nearly copied Rihanna’s past performance of “Cockiness” in 2012 with the red outfits and throne at the top of the stage. But I guess it does get difficult to constantly be original, year after year, especially after artists like Madonna already set the expectations for performances nearly two decades ago. Minaj and Swift were at least fully clothed throughout the show, unlike some of the other celebs.

Cyrus walked out onto the stage with an outfit that looked like she should have been singing “Copa Cobana.” She started off the show with a low-cut jump suit that was too revealing to be on television before 10 p.m. But the outfits just kept getting worse.

Minaj came back to the stage accepting the award for her music video “Anaconda” as well as calling out Cyrus for “trash talking” her in an interview the past week. Cyrus answered with a congratulations and continued on hosting, but put a snarky tone to her next announcement for the Artist To Watch award.

The Weekend then performed “Can’t Feel My Face,” which was so simple but good. Sparks flew, or rather flames, at he performed his heart out and sang the new 2015 hit.

Demi Lovato performed her new song “Cool For the Summer” with guest Iggy Azalea. The two rocked the stage in downtown LA to help clean up Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ awful performance. Although Lovato came out of her shell, showing a little bit of a sex appeal to the crowd, her voice sounded amazing and her confidence radiated off the stage and through my TV screen.

Next Justin Bieber, who hasn’t been on stage in nearly two years performed his new song “Where are U now” featuring Skrillex as well as his new song “What Do You Mean,” shedding a few tears after the performance was over. Bieber took somewhat of a hiatus and the VMA’s was his first debut for two years.

Although many well-known artists took the stage, new and beautiful singer Tori Kelly performed her song “Shoulda Been Us” showing off her amazing vocal talents and guitar skills. Her outfit was drop dead as well.

Hip hop artist Kanye West, who interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech in 2009, announced that he was going to run for President in the 2020 election, after accepting the Video Vanguard award, which was given to David Bowie at the first VMA in 1984 and the Beatles the following year. West, married to Kim Kardashian, who was dressed like she came straight out of the “Hobbit” movies, won the award, but that was not the only award won of the night.

The Video of the Year went to, surprise surprise, Swift who took home four Moonmen for the night. Fall Out Boy, Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars also took home some Moonmen, as did a few other artists.

After that, more artists were presented awards and the night ended with Cyrus performing her new song, which I am actually surprised they aired, but I guess when it comes to MTV, they can get away with a lot of things that normal stations cannot.

The VMA’s are something that I look forward to every August but this year’s show let me down. With the same artists winning the same awards every year, the only interesting part is the performances, and even those were unoriginal this year. I only hope that the 2016 VMA’s will be better and more entertaining.
