Disney ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’
December 15, 2016
“It’s gonna take days to wipe the smile off my face;” “Holy Sith! @RogueOneMovie is unbelievably wonderful;” “With all the talk of re-shoots and production problems the final cut of Rogue One is worth the wait.”
These three Time Magazine tweets describe the newest addition to the Star Wars universe: “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”
The story that has Twitter raving is based in a time period directly before the beginning of the original trilogy (Episodes IV-VI), according to Screen Rant.
“I will be there with my three boys and my father who took me to the first Star Wars movie in 1977 when I was five years old,” EHS teacher Dene Schickedanz said.
“Rogue One” is directed by Gareth Edwards, who was visited by George Lucas on set. Lucas watched the movie and spoke to Edwards, who was ecstatic.
“We got to show George the movie … and I don’t want to put words into his mouth, but I can honestly say that I can die happy now,” Edwards told Screen Rant.
“Rogue One” follows a rebel soldier, Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), as she leads a group of rebels to recover plans for the Death Star. Mon Mothma (Genevieve O’Reilly) will later use these plans to destroy the Death Star in “A New Hope.”
When Lucasfilm made the first movie, “A New Hope,” in 1977 it was actually the fourth in the series. “The Empire Strikes Back” came second as Episode V. These two films were adored the most by fans of all ages.
Lucas tied up the trilogy with “Return of the Jedi.”
The prequels followed the original trilogy. Episodes I-III were not given the same love as the classic saga, with Lucas’s reliance on CGI (Computer Generated Images) falling under scrutiny.
Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 and promised to continue the saga. Their first attempt was Episode VII, “The Force Awakens,” which revived the story almost too well, with a plot largely parallel to the originals.
“They [Disney] didn’t take any chances,” Mr. Schickedanz said. “The first movie since they took over Lucasfilm needed to be a success, so they went back to the old playbook.”
He compared “The Force Awakens” to “A New Hope” with a “planet destroying super weapon.” They should take more chances when they complete Episode VIII, Mr. Schickedanz said.
Fortunately, this newest attempt is set to be different, with a spotlight on the rebels and their battle.
“It’s not focused on Jedi or force-wielding people,” Mr. Schickedanz said. “All other Star Wars movies heavily deal with Jedi and Sith.”
“Rogue One” is the first full-movie spinoff from the popular saga that began almost 40 years ago. Disney promised to expand the universe through stories that were related but disconnected from the Star Wars saga.
According to the CEO of Lucasfilm, there will be no sequel.
This standalone will be the first of (hopefully) many intertwined stories of life in the galaxy far, far away.
