Pop singer and songwriter Gracie Abrams recently released her new album, “The Secret of Us (Deluxe),” which features seven new modern hits, including three songs that were previously performed live.
Abrams’ new album was officially announced Oct. 15 at her acoustic show in Toronto, where she performed one of her new songs featured on the deluxe album, “That’s So True.”
This album, which is her sixth one, was released to the public Oct. 18.
In the new album, Abrams reflects on her past crushes and relationships, focusing on elements of jealousy, regret and the risk of falling for someone.
The first new song on the deluxe album is “Cool,” which centers on acting unaffected or “cool” after a breakup. The indie song consists of more breathy and light lyrics with a mellow undertone.
One interesting aspect of the song is the speculation on who the song is secretly about. Many fans rumor that it is about Dylan O’Brien and three of his past lovers, including Sadie Sink, Sarah Ramos and Elle Fanning.
Moving from a melancholy song to a more upbeat and vibrant one, “That’s So True” is about the feelings of jealousy and betrayal once an ex gets a new partner. The use of acoustic guitar and a more upbeat feel adds to the energetic tone of the song. The catchy beat of the song had me nodding my head and singing along.
“I Told You Things” is very similar to “Cool” in the sense that both are slower songs with sad and mellow tones. As opposed to the songs on the original soundtrack, these two are more indie-based, unlike the other pop-centered ones.
“I Told You Things” focuses on how Abrams told her past partners things and then regretted it because they reacted irrationally. For example, “I told you things that I never said to anybody else, I regret them” are lyric representations of this. I thought the lyrics and deliverance of the overall message were clear, but the song was a little too slow for what I was in the mood for.
Closing up the new songs on the album, Abrams sings “Packing It Up,” which is a light, airy and happy song that romanticizes finding a perfect relationship when you feel like giving up. The soft touch of acoustic guitar gives a gentle and energetic feel. Honestly, this song feels sunshiny and fresh, almost like a summer day.
To end the album, Abrams included three live versions from Gracie’s Vevo Extended Play session, which include “I Love You, I’m Sorry,” “I Knew It, I Know You” and “Free Now.”
Overall, I found listening to “The Secret of Us (Deluxe)” to be an enjoyable experience. The blend of indie and pop, mellow and upbeat and gentle and energetic melodies contributed to a unique and desirable listen.
Gracie Abrams outdid herself again, leaving listeners with catchy tunes that will stay for days.
