‘American Crime Story: The People Vs. OJ’ Catches Attention
February 11, 2016
Ryan Murphy, the same director that brought us the brilliant comedy “Glee” and the horrifying seasons of “American Horror Story” has done it again with another ground breaking TV series including many big faces such as John Travolta and “Snow Dogs” star Cuba Gooding Jr.
The show began with news footage of the Rodney King riots in Los Angeles California. As an 18 year old who was not even alive at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial, this left me confused but only for a second. What did the Rodney King riots have to do with Simpson’s murder trial?
Any and all questions that may run across your head as a late 90s baby are answered almost as quick as you can think them. If you were alive during the trial, you may find some of the story and actor’s portrayals as comical.
The “Friends” star David Schwimmer plays Rob Kardashian, one of the numerous defense attorneys working for Simpson. The fake tan is noticeable and you can’t help but laugh at the black hair with the grey strip that noticeably has too much gel in it.
The first glimpse you get of Travolta makes you take a second look. His eyebrows seem to be darkened and his hair lighter. Another fake tan makes the Hollywood setting that much more believable.
From start to finish of the first episode, your attention never breaks. Every minute is a building block of the case and will become confusing if you miss the littlest detail. But that is how a TV show should be.
Going back and forth from the DA to the defense, everything is left up to interpretation. Unlike the hit phenomenon “Making a Murderer” both sides seem to be portrayed accurately and evenly, allowing you to form your own opinion about the case as the series goes on. The multiple Kardashian references become funny after a while, especially when Schwimmer’s character calls his daughter “Kimmie.” Connie Britton, who plays Faye Resnick, looks like no character she has ever played. If I didn’t know better I would have thought of her as part of the actual Kardashian family.
The exceptional cast and directing left me impatiently waiting for the next week, eager to see the next episode.
