Over the last three years cell phones have been a minimal interruption in my opinion, but this year is a different story. I have noticed a spike in interruptions in class caused by cell phones.
I am not going to pretend that we are all perfect; everyone who has a cell phone has used it in school at one point or another. But the truth of the matter is, it is still against the rules. If you do use your cell phones, you shouldn’t be so blatantly obvious and disruptive about it.
People walk down the halls texting, sit at lunch texting, check Facebook, surf the internet and so on and so forth. I am astonished by how many times I am sitting in class and I take a look around the room to find nearly a third of the class has their phones out.
It’s irritating to teachers who have to stop their lectures to tell you to put your phone away, only to lose their places and forget what they where talking about. It is just a waste of time for all parties involved.
According to the rules, your phone should be taken by your teacher and turned in to your administrator. Then, at the end of the day you can go pick it up from them. Students don’t always receive referrals for being caught with their cell phones, but most of the time their phones are confiscated and turned in to their assistant principals, who can choose to discipline the students further.
If you’re sneaky and don’t get caught, good for you, but it’s still obnoxious and disrespectful. Do yourself and everyone else a favor and keep your phone out of sight.
