Valentine’s Day is all about grand gestures to tell someone you like them, and nothing says it better than a fresh bouquet. Some flowers are classic, others are overrated and some deserve more appreciation.
If you plan on gifting someone flowers on Feb. 14 — which you should — make sure you pick the right ones. I may not be the person you’re giving the flowers to, so if you’re lost, I suggest asking what they like. If not, and you need some help, here is my official ranking of the best flowers to give someone on Valentine’s Day.
5. Carnations
If you’re on a bit of a budget, this is the flower for you. With soft, ruffled petals and a variety of color options, the carnation is a delicate and pretty flower for any occasion. While it’s often seen as a filler flower in bouquets, I think carnations can work well on their own. They also tend to last longer than other flowers, making them a great choice as a gift.
Though simple-looking, the carnation is a fitting Valentine’s Day gift. While it’s not the best flower to give, it’s also not the worst. If you plan on gifting carnations, I recommend mixing in some smaller flowers to make the bouquet look more thoughtful and unique.
4. Roses
While I’m well aware roses are the number one flower to get on Valentine’s Day, I’m tired of seeing them. I do think they’re pretty, with their layers of red petals and classic shape, but they seem overused. The rose is a timeless flower of romance, but it’s a safe choice. If you want to play it safe this year, this flower is for you. But, if you have your heart set on getting that special someone a rose, I would opt for a color other than red or add some other flowers into the mix.
3. Tulips
Though simple-looking, the tulip is a classy and elegant flower to give. With cup-shaped petals that overlap symmetrically, tulips have a unique look. They don’t need to be in a bouquet to be considered pretty — their natural shape makes them stand out, whether gifted as a single stem or a bunch. Tulips also come in a variety of colors, and for Valentine’s Day, I recommend red or pink.
They also don’t have an overpowering scent, which is nice for those who may be sensitive to floral smells. The tulip is an underrated choice, making it feel even more special to give. I would have ranked this flower higher, but the others trumped it.
2. Orchids
This is my favorite flower, but the only downside is that they’re expensive and don’t work in a traditional bouquet. Orchids may feel like an awkward gift because they come in a pot, but, on the bright side, that also means they serve as their own premade vase. With softer-toned colors and uniquely shaped petals, orchids stand out, even when just gifted alone. They make a bold and elegant Valentine’s Day gift, making the receiver feel truly seen. If you’re not on a budget and don’t mind searching for them, I highly recommend orchids.
1. Lilies
The lily is one of the most beautiful and complex flowers I’ve ever seen, which is why it ranks number one. Unlike other flowers, lilies have an ombre effect, shifting from one color to another. Their large petals fan out from the center when they bloom, creating a striking display. Even before they fully bloom, lilies still look gorgeous.
If you decide to gift a bouquet of lilies, I recommend wrapping them in paper to complement the intricate color patterns of the petals. Because of their unique color schemes and delicate details, lilies are the best flower to give someone on Valentine’s Day.
