Serena Williams has played a total of 72 single matches and won 55, also has a high serve speed of 128 mph and has the best serve percentage of any man or women of all time, all by age 31.
Coached by her father Richard Williams and mother Oracene Price, began playing tennis at age 5 along with her older sister Venus at public courts in Compton, California. Williams is the youngest of five girls (three deceased in 2003). She turned pro in September 1995 at age 14.
After that there were no shortages of accomplishments for Serena. She has won the U.S. Open three times, the Australian Open five times, the French Open once, the Wimbledon four times, has two Olympic gold medals and in 2003 was the ninth women of all-time too have won each of the four Grand Slam titles.
There are four major tournaments in tennis each year, the U.S Open, the Australian Open, the French Open and the Wimbledon. They are all known as the Grand Slam tournaments. A player must win all four of these tournaments at some time in their career to win the title of Grand Slam Champion. Serena Williams has 17 Grand Slam titles.
Although as many Grand Slam titles as she has; she does not have the most. The leader in Grand Slam titles for women is Margaret Smith Court with a total of 24.
Serena has become such an icon because of her dedication, raw talent and fierce competition. Not to mention her colorful ensembles.
Considering that Serena Williams is still young and in top form, the tennis world will probably see her in the future to win many more Grand Slam titles.
