He is the newest sensation in the major leagues as we know it. He has racked up a total of nine homeruns and 15 RBI’s in only 28 plate appearances. His name is Kris Bryant and he’ll be starting third base for the Chicago Cubs this season… in the minor leagues.
The top prospect in baseball is off to a hot start in his second major league spring ball action. He is currently leading the majors in homeruns almost doubling the man trailing him. Bryant now has three two-homerun games this spring alone.
Newly acquired outfielder Dexter Fowler of the Cubs was in a Triple-A rehab game for the Astros last summer and reminisced on Bryant. “I was like, ‘Who are these kids?” Fowler recalled. “I told (John) Mallee (then the Astros’ hitting coach); I’ve never seen anything like it. In the minor leagues, you never see anything like that.”
So why is this third basemen capable of tearing the lining off the ball starting in the minor leagues? Theo Epstein, President of Baseball Operations for the Chicago Cubs, claims that he is keeping Bryant in the minors to let him get his feet wet. The real reasoning behind the madness is to avoid arbitration. Basically, they won’t have to pay Bryant.
Cub fans seem to understand the reasoning behind Epsteins move. “We would have to pay him lots of money that we can spend on someone else,” said senior fan Jack Lever whose been a lifelong Cubs fan. “He’s a great player that’s only 23 years old, he has plenty of time but Chicago is ready for him.”
Bryant is MLB ready, we all know that. But people that are irate about this situation need to calm down. Kris Bryant will just have to wait the 12 games mandatory to avoid arbitration then he can be a star.
