Despite Loss of Rams, St. Louis Sports Continue Sucess
April 14, 2016
It’s April in St. Louis and business is as usual. The Blues are back in the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year and the Cardinals are back at Busch winning in a sizable fashion. All is well, all is good. Team St. Louis is firing on all cylinders, despite now being an army of only two.
Though still there, the pain from the departure of our beloved St. Louis Rams is subsiding with much thanks to the loyalty of our duo of winning teams. The occasional Rams jersey can be seen still roaming around but the numbers dwindle as we get to rep those coveted birds on the bat every day of the week. The occasional “Kroenke Sucks” chant still rings through ScottTrade and that’s okay because the truth hurts.
But St. Louis, we’re going to be alright.
What did the Rams give us anyways? They gave us 16 games of false hope, 16 games of maybe next season and 16 games of pure frustration and almosts. Sure they gave us the Greatest Show on Turf, the rise of Kurt Werner and a few good Sunday afternoons here and there but the Rams organization did not deserve St. Louis.
What this town gives to its sports is indescribable. What the Rams gave to St. Louis was mediocre at best.
I’ll be the first to say, I was crushed when I heard that the St. Louis Rams were no more. I grew up here in the best baseball city in America and I will tell you all day long football is the greatest game on Earth. There was something about walking up to the Dome four hours before kickoff and seeing the people out tailgating and ready to cheer on yet another probable loss.
But the Rams did not deserve us, remember that.
Team St. Louis will not always be an army of two. The Rams leaving may have been the best thing for us. The opportunity to add an MLS team to our arsenal is now greater than ever and if there is anything this town loves as much as baseball, it’s soccer. The opportunity of having an NBA team to “bring the Spirit back to St. Louis” is now an entertainable idea. Though we are a city of just two professional sports teams now I don’t believe that is a state we will forever be stuck in because what this town gives to its teams is unlike anywhere else.
I might be one of the few who hope to see the NFL one day back in St. Louis and I will welcome them with open arms should that day come but I also just hope to see this town rekindle its relationship with the game of football. What the Rams Organization gave us was not what many other NFL organizations give to their fan bases.
Until that day comes when Team St. Louis becomes three again, no matter the sport, there is one thing we can rely on. Team St. Louis will never be a team of one because the Cardinals and Blues are two of the most loyal organizations in sports.
We’re going to be alright, St. Louis. Remember that.
