One Team, One Sport, Eight Wins

As the cold fronts start to move in, the legendary Lady Tigers basketball season follows and the Tigers are heating up the courts.

The Lady Tigers have shown great skill this far into the season with extraordinary games and a perfect season record of 8-0.

“We credit our success to our great coaches and each other for working hard every day in practice,” junior and shooting guard Kate Martin said.

But working hard is something any other team, hungry for the win, would do. What sets the Lady Tigers apart from their opponents is how much additional effort they put into being ready for every game they face.

According to senior and team captain Makenzie Silvey, the girls meet in the EHS gym each morning and shoot 100 free throws. Later, they all meet in the locker room, during lunch, and watch films of their past games and of their opponent’s games to see what they can improve upon. Finally after school, they have a “hard” two and a half hour practice and then the cycle repeats itself the next day.

And luckily for the girls, this work and dedication has payed off.

From the Lady’s first game, they showed immense promise with a 34 point massacre against Peoria ending in a score of 77-43. Their next seven games that followed showed the same type of domination with almost all of the games ending with the Lady Tigers in a 20 (or more) point lead.

But not only are the Lady’s accomplishing goals as a team, two of their individuals were honored for scoring their 1000th point while on the varsity team. These two players are Makenzie Silvey and Rachel Pranger.

“It was an honor to be associated with a group of players that are really talented,” Silvey said, “but I couldn’t have scored that many points without my teammates giving me great passes and helping me keep my confidence.”

But although their progress has been exceptional and their hard work is sure to pay off, Silvey blames most of their achievements on their relationship as a team.

“I think we have really good team chemistry,” she said. “We all love playing with each other and we’re all very unselfish on the court. We look for the extra pass and we don’t really care who scores as long as we all score.”
