Olympic Update: What’s the Standing so Far?
February 15, 2018
On Feb. 9, the Pyeongchang winter ceremonies ushered in the 2018 Olympics.
So, how’s the U.S. doing so far?
Team USA has accumulated seven medals: four in gold, one in silver and two in bronze, according to CBS Sports. They fall behind Germany and the Netherlands, who have 12 and 11 medals total.
Red Gerard, age 17, won the gold medal in snowboard slopestyle, becoming the first American to medal in the Pyeonchang games, USA Today said.
The 2018 games marked Gerard’s entrance into the Olympic world.
“I can’t believe everything worked out, and honestly I don’t think I’ve really had time for it to set in yet,” he told USA Today. “I’m just so happy I got to land a run, and just to end up on the podium is awesome.”
Female snowboarders Jamie Anderson and Chloe Kim followed Gerard to a gold-medal finish. This win marks Anderson’s second gold medal and 17-year-old Kim’s first.
Veteran snowboarder Shaun White also brought home a gold medal, marking the U.S.’s hundredth gold medal in history.
Team USA took home a bronze medal in team figure skating, thanks to Adam Rippon, Mirai Nagasu, Bradie Tennell, Nathan Chen and others.
Nagasu became the first American woman in history to land a triple axel and the third overall in the Olympics, the Chicago Tribune said.
Chris Mazdezer also brought home a silver medal in luge, the first in men’s singles.
Arielle Gold rounds out the U.S. victories with a bronze medal in snowboarding.
Senior Kayla Gluntz has been enjoying Team USA’s performance so far.
“I’ve watched some figure skating and a little bit of snowboarding,” she said. “I like how beautiful and creative the figure skating is and how accurate the snowboarders have to be. Team USA is doing pretty well in what I’ve seen so far.”
