Edwardsville football’s postseason run came to an end Saturday after a 50-14 loss to defending state champions Lincoln-Way East.

The Tigers opened up the game with an interception by junior Ethan Young. On the very next play, senior Kendall Abdur-Rahman threw an interception of his own, which set up Lincoln-Way for its first score.

Edwardsville followed with two more fumbles on the next two drives and Lincoln-Way capitalized with two more touchdowns, giving them a 20-0 lead in the first quarter.

“We talked about it all week that ball security is priority No. 1,” Edwardsville head coach Matt Martin said to the Post-Dispatch. “But you got to give them credit, they do it to a lot of teams, so it’s either taught or they have a knack for it. They do a great job.”

With five minutes to go in the first half, Abdur-Rahman put the Tigers on the board with a 23-yard touchdown run to make the score 23-7.

Still, Lincoln-Way kept pouring it on, and managed a 37-7 lead before half-time. And that continued in the second half, as the Griffins scored two more touchdowns.

The Tigers closed out the season on a good note, however, as Abdur-Rahman threw a touchdown pass to senior wide out Lavontas Harriston with seconds remaining in the game.

“(Harriston) made a great play and for a senior to go out like that, good for him,” Martin said to the Post-Dispatch.

This senior group has done a lot for the Tigers. Over the last four years Edwardsville has managed a 36-11 record, as well as trips to the state semi and quarterfinals.

“Being a Tiger is probably the best thing that has happened to me,” senior Ricky Landrem said. “Being a part of this program has made me into the person I am today and has helped me stride to be the best I can be.”
