Star-Powered Matchup Set for Super Bowl 57

After one the most unpredictable seasons in NFL history, the two top seeds in the league will meet in Glendale, Ariz. for the rights to the Lombardi trophy.

The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs steamrolled their conferences this season, with two of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the league in control. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts revitalized his career in one season, and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes collected more accolades in his Hall of Fame career.

Philadelphia acquired receiver AJ Brown from the Tennessee Titans on a draft day trade, adding to the catalog of weapons for Hurts. After picking former Alabama receiver Devonta Smith in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Eagles built the perfect base for Hurts and his offense. Hurts won back-to-back NFC Offensive Player of the Week awards this season and was named as an MVP candidate.

Mahomes formerly relied on receiver Tyreek Hill, but a trade sent Mahomes’ top target to the Miami Dolphins. The trade raised questions on how productive Mahomes could be without his best receiver, but the former MVP had one of his best seasons to date. The Chiefs’ team captain threw for over 500 yards this postseason without committing any turnovers.

The matchup is guaranteed to be an offensive shootout featuring two of the top receiving corps in the NFL.

Regardless of Hurts’ MVP-caliber season, the quarterback rarely faced formidable opponents. Philadelphia only faced the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs this season. Hurts hasn’t battled an elite quarterback since his Nov. 27 matchup with Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers.

Mahomes has proven his worth against the NFL’s greatest, as the MVP candidate has defeated Pro Bowl quarterback’s such as Joe Burrow and Josh Allen in his playoff reign. Mahomes enters his third Super Bowl appearance with an impressive supporting cast, including tight end Travis Kelce, wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster and head coach Andy Reid.

Reid is familiar with Philadelphia, having coached the Eagles for 14 years. During his tenure, Reid was notorious for choking in crucial games and being ridiculed by Eagles fans every season. As the head coach of the Chiefs, Reid has built a winning culture with ease and added a Super Bowl win to his list of achievements in 2020.

The Eagles stellar defense has the potential to put them over the edge. As dominant as Mahomes and the Chiefs can be, their loss to Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Super Bowl two years ago proves their inability to win against strong defensive units.

This year’s title matchup features two of the most equally talented teams the league has ever seen in a championship game. While the defenses, receiving corps and coaching staffs are similar with both teams, Mahomes is a generational talent who will be the deciding factor in Glendale.
