A nail-biting game last Friday night left fans disappointed but proud of their Edwardsville Tigers’ varsity football team losing by one point to Lawrence Central who traveled from Indianapolis to play in the game.
This was the first home game of the season, aside from a scrimmage played against Triad three weeks ago.
The team played an away game against Glenwood the following week. This started the season off with a win.
The Tigers played a close game against Lawrence, but they lost the game by a score of 22-21.
The loss came down to a singular field goal at the end of the game kicked by junior Hunter Lading.
“As soon as I kicked it, I knew I missed it,” Lading said.
Lading said that missing the field goal was disappointing, but he takes pride knowing that “everyone on the team played their hardest.”
The Tigers had already come a long way since half time, so the end score was still remarkable.
Lawrence was up 14-7 at the end of the first half, meaning the Tigers worked hard to catch up and come close to winning.
“We came out during the second half and did really well,” Lading said.
Lading said that he and his teammates are working hard at practice to prepare for the next game of the season Sept. 13 against Jackson High School in Missouri.
Athletic Director Amy Boscolo said that the game came down to so much more than just a field goal.
“We had plenty of opportunities to score throughout the entire game,” Ms. Boscolo said. “One student athlete is never, ever responsible for a team losing.”
