The Edwardsville girls swim team improved their season record to 7-0 on Oct. 10 against Glenwood.
The Tigers won 11 of the 12 events and beat Glenwood in the Dive.
For Sophomore Reilly Curry, the meet went exactly as planned; swimming a 2:12 in the 200 individual medley and winning her race with her teammate junior Georgia Samet who came in second place with a time of 2:15, combining for 10 total points for the race.
“We were very determined to pull off the win and tried our hardest,” Curry said, “The meet against Glenwood was a good meet for us since most of us swam our best races.”
Curry, a second-year swimmer for the tigers, also competed in the 100-meter fly with a time of 1:01, coming in second to junior Scout Jackson who swam 58.53 seconds, her season best time in the event.
Another member of the team to see success this meet was Senior Karis Chen, who raced in the 200-meter relay, 200 medley relay, 100-meter breaststroke and the 100-meter free, which she swam a personal record of 55.74 coming in second place.
“I love getting to race,” Chen said. “Even when there aren’t a lot of people in the race it is always good to get better times.”
Chen, who has been a member of the team since her freshmen year, has seen the team’s success longer than most, being one of only two seniors on varsity.
Chen also sees the importance of team chemistry in a sport like swimming where the team’s performance is determined by individual races.
“Having good chemistry is really important for our team to be successful,” Chen said. “It’s important at practice and meets. At practice we’re constantly pushing each other to do better and at meets when we’re all cheering each other on we definitely swim better.”
Junior Grace Oertle feels like the team’s long-standing success is based all on mindset.
“At all meets I try to have a positive mindset no matter what knowing how good our success will be as long as we try our best.” Oertle said.
Oertle swam the 50-meter freestyle, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay and 400 free relay against Glenwood and saw a season best time in the 50, where she swam 24.38 seconds.
The Tigers look forward to their next meet on Oct. 19, the annual ‘Swim for HOPE’ meet which goes to support Allison’s HOPE, a fundraiser for colon cancer awareness started by former Edwardsville swimmer Allison Cassens.
