It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for: the championships of the 2024 season. The Bills, Commanders, Eagles and Chiefs are all vying for the opportunity to win it all at the Super Bowl. The final scores are counted and … it’s going to be a rematch nobody wanted.
On one side, we have the Philadelphia Eagles, the team that once was the beloved underdog that ended the reign of the New England Patriots in the 2018 Super Bowl but is now ignored or disliked by most people outside of Philadelphia.
And on the other, we have the Kansas City Chiefs, the tyrants and cash cows of the NFL that are attempting to do the league’s first three-peat in history after a season of incredibly close games won by last minute miracles, sprinkled with a couple losses.
If I were to be asked what team I want to win next Sunday, I suppose I’d reluctantly say the Eagles. I’m not a fan of theirs at all — I haven’t rooted for them in a game since 2019 —, but my disdain for the Chiefs’ “dynasty” trumps my indifference towards the Eagles.
It’s not that I don’t like the Chiefs; I recognize that the team is made up of excellent players and is undoubtedly good enough to be in the Super Bowl. My problem with the Chiefs right now is how the NFL is obviously playing favorites with them.
Am I saying the Super Bowl will be rigged for a Chiefs three-peat? No. Do I think it is suspicious that the league’s most popular, profitable team is on a historic streak? Yes.
I hope that the NFL isn’t scripting the game for a Chiefs win, but when looking at how much the league is hyping the team up compared to the Eagles on social media, it’s apparent that they’re banking on them winning.
Part of why the league is so insistent on puffing the Chiefs up is because the team has an exclusive opportunity when it comes to the Super Bowl: getting Taylor Swift’s fans to show up and tune in.
It was already bad enough at last year’s game, where Swift and other artists seemed to get as much screen time as the ball and Swifties dominated any discussion involving the Super Bowl.
I’m not hating on Taylor Swift, or any other artist, for going to the game or talking about it, especially when they’re dating a player. However, there is a time and place for putting celebrities in the spotlight and the Super Bowl is not it.
Ideally, this year’s game will have cameras aimed at the players and not the stands, but the NFL has shown it is willing to sacrifice game footage for clicks.
Even if the game this year is as normal as a Super Bowl can be, there is still one crucial detail that will cause people to not watch: this year’s matchup is just plain boring.
Seeing the Eagles again after four years is somewhat exciting, if only for their fans, but the team simply does not have the same underdog love it did when it beat the Patriots.
Despite how the Chiefs have a chokehold on the NFL, this matchup seems less like another David and Goliath-esque battle and more like watching two random strangers duke it out for a few hours.
I’m sure it won’t be the worst Super Bowl by any means, but this year’s matchup is shaping up to be a letdown that could be described with one word: meh.
But hey, at least the ads are good right?
