While many students will be spending their Saturday morning sleeping in, the boys volleyball team, and all of their willing participants, will be preparing for their 10th annual coed volleyball tournament.
Assistant coach Thomas Hartnagel said that the participation can vary depending on the year. Some years they can get up to 12 teams playing, and in others, only eight groups join in on the fun.
“This time around we’ve got 11 teams signed up, which is awesome,” Hartnagel said.
This year’s tournament is a mean of fundraising for new team equipment and warm up jerseys.
Junior Collin Walsh, a member of the boys volleyball team, has participated in the tournament before and appreciates it for more reasons than just the money it brings the team.
“I like the event because volleyball has always been one of my favorite sports,” Walsh said. “It’s a fun way to play volleyball with friends and just have a good time.”
The tournament is more about fun than it is for actual competition.
Several teams of varying capabilities will be playing one another, including some EHS alumni and six members of the boys volleyball team.
Senior girls volleyball player Kelsey Renth said she won’t be playing in the games but will be watching.
“I think it will be fun to watch volleyball,” Renth said. “Especially because a lot of my friends will be there, and it will be super fun to watch them play together.”
As they enter their 10-year anniversary of this event, the boys volleyball team appreciates that people are not just showing up to support them but to enjoy themselves.
“What makes the tournament special,” Hartnagel said. “Is seeing folks from the community come out to play and have a good time.”
