They Paved Paradise but We’re Painting Our Parking Spots

Members of the student advisory board have gotten approval from the administration for students to paint and personalize their parking spaces this fall.

According to junior Libby Strahm, the idea came to the group’s attention when junior Luke Slater asked Dr. Shelton at a school board meeting why students don’t paint their parking spots.

Dr. Shelton told the advisory board that he had always been okay with the idea, but no one had ever planned or coordinated it. This called the group to action.

Junior Alyssa Ragsdale said personalizing her spot was something she had always wanted to do, and that she had heard other students talk about wanting to as well.

“It was something we genuinely cared about and wanted to happen,” junior Sean Henson said.

The group met up and started planning out what the process for getting students to be able to paint their parking spaces would look like.

“To get it approved we made a formal approval,” Strahm said. “Thanks to Canva it looked pretty fancy.”

According to Strahm, they prepared their pitch and then they presented it to Dr. Stuart after the following school board meeting. It was approved immediately.

Henson said that the spots will be an opportunity to bring people together, will provide a space for students to express themselves, and will help boost school morale. On top of benefitting the school, all of the proceeds will also go to a good cause, being donated to Special Olympics.

Strahm agreed with Henson’s assertion about the parking spots creating a space for self-expression. “I think the parking lot will look like all the students at the school,” Strahm said.

Ragsdale said it feels incredibly rewarding to have been a part of the group to get this motion approved.

“I look forward to continuing to use my voice and input to make the school better,” Ragsdale said.
