Due to the threat of severe weather in Madison County last Friday, the Future Teacher’s event was rescheduled from March 13 to March 28 at 6:30 p.m.
Warnings from both local meteorologists and the National Weather Service led many parents to pull their children out of the event for their safety.
The event is a large project given to the Future Teacher’s 2 class. Seniors Henry Winslow, Emerson Doughty and Tessa Bevineau planned it at the beginning of third quarter.
Doughty described the event as a fun Hawaiian-themed parents’ night out event where kids can participate in several different events.
“We have five rooms with different activities,” Doughty said. “Making a flower lei, a popsicle stick shark craft, ‘Just Dance,’ karaoke and relay races.”
The project aims to give students hands-on experience with making activities, dealing with schedules and having more interaction with elementary students.
Winslow was in charge of behind-the-scenes of the event.
“I did all the organizational stuff,” Winslow said. “I made the form, I made the groups that the kids were in, and I made sure we had enough volunteers.”
Fifteen students in the Future Teacher 1 class or in the Tiger Teachers of Tomorrow club volunteered to help with the event as well.
Rescheduling meant some volunteers were not able to make it due to prior commitments.
“It’s just a lot of work to [rework] everything around different schedules,” Winslow said.
Winslow, who is weeks away from performing in the spring musical, has to switch from four-hour-long rehearsals in drag to a future elementary teacher to host the event.
Doughty is confident the event will go smoothly because everything was planned for several months — It’s just a matter of dealing with the new date.
“Since the event was supposed to happen on [March 14], we already have everything ready to go,” Doughty said.
