Once again, girls are getting their hair and nails done while the boys are making sure their ties are straight. This is how teenagers get ready for homecoming. But how does the gym get ready?
Every year the drama students and Student Council come at 8 a.m. on Saturday to decorate and turn the gym into a completely different atmosphere for that one night.
The tech crew starts their work on the Wednesday before homecoming to set up the lights for coronation. “We work about 2-3 hours every day,” junior Carlee Hoxworth said. “To set up we take as many people as are willing to come,” Hoxworth said, “though it only takes six to seven [people] to actually work homecoming.”
Hoxworth said she enjoys putting up the lights and helping out. Student Council is the biggest contributors in making sure everything is above everyone’s expectations. “Student Council basically lives at the school during homecoming week,” senior Stephanie Gaytan said, “you can find everything from blankets to toaster ovens in Mrs. Beck’s room.”
They take the time out of their busy schedules to decorate the hallways, gym, stage and commons, which takes about seven to eight hours that Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
Gaytan shared that the gym will be a huge underwater theme. There will be lots of blues and greens, and Student Council is also having remote control fish swim through the gym and hallway. There will also be tons of projections and moving items that will make it come to life.
“My favorite part of homecoming preparation is seeing the ideas of a 36 member council come to life,” senior Emily Mosby said, “and seeing the sense of school spirit from our student body as week’s events play out.” It will be interesting to see this year how Student Council transforms the EHS gym into the lost city of Atlantis.
